When players talk about topspin they usually describe feel control and margin. What often gets overlooked is just how violently a ball is rotating in the air after you hit it. From the moment the strings or paddle brush up the back of the ball until it lands on the other side of the net the ball is spinning hundreds sometimes thousands of times. That spin is what makes the ball dip explode forward and kick up off the court.

What is topspin really doing?
Topspin is forward rotation of the ball. When the ball rotates forward it interacts with the air through something called the Magnus effect. This creates a downward force that pulls the ball into the court faster than gravity alone. The faster the rotation the stronger this effect.
